This incident took place somewhere during pre-independence days, when the British were ruling India. Lt. Col. Fauzan Ali along with his small unit of 10 soldiers had been to Malda in West Bengal, to catch a gang of dacoits, who were notorious for many instances of looting and murdering travelers in that area.
A local villager named Babu, was their informant, who provided them with important information. Babu told Col. Ali and his team to stay on the outskirts of the village in an ancient fort, which were now ruins, although he did warn them that the locals believed the place to be haunted.
Col. Ali and his soldiers, being the real brave-hearts that they were, over-ruled the warning given by Babu, saying that nothing could scare them. Babu said the ruins were a safe place, since the village was not very far, they could hide their weapons and nobody visits the ruins, also the dacoits would never know of their plan and would be caught easily.
It was a good place to keep a watch for the looters, since many travelers used this path. As decided, Col. Ali and his unit camped in the ruins and as night came, they started preparing to sleep, while a few were to keep a watch for the miscreants.
Around midnight, it was dead quiet, and the only sound one could hear was the cool breeze blowing, when suddenly, some strange noises started coming. It felt like a lot of horses were galloping and people were preparing to attack. The soldiers who were sleeping inside, got alert too and ran outside to check the source of the noise.
But like the soldiers keeping guard, they too were taken aback, since it was pitch dark and there wasn't a single soul in sight. The noises seemed to be coming right in front of them, however nothing was visible. Someone yelled to attack and there were loud noises of clanging and clashing of swords.
Col. Ali and all the unit members looked at each other, wondering and trying to make any sense out of it. It felt like two armies were fighting each other, with sounds of sword fights and people screaming in pain on getting hurt.
Col. Ali was also pretty perturbed by all these strange noises, but tried his best to keep everyone composed and told them to ignore the happenings. As they went inside the ruins, they saw the old and rusted swords and shields hung inside the ancient structure too come to life.
As if invisible hands held the swords and shields and started fighting with each other. All the men, who were trying really hard to be brave, could not take these strange happenings anymore and decided to leave the ruins for good.
They camped on the plains nearby for the rest of the night. After few more hours of ear-deafening cries and fights, everything became peaceful once again. As morning came, they all went back to the village and told Babu the entire incident.
Babu then clarified to them, that the ruins had witnessed war and bloodshed over a period of many years, which is why the strange noises, perhaps!! Col. Ali, who was a veteran and a very courageous man said, "a soldier is not afraid of death standing right in front of him, but how do you fight an invisible enemy?"
