Currently, the Hindu month of Shravan is going on, which inspires me to share with you all a True Miracle story of Lord Shiva. Baijnath Mahadev temple in today's Agar Malwa, Madhya Pradesh is the only temple in India, to be restored and renovated by a British couple. To know how and why this happened, please continue reading below.
This incident took place in the year 1879, when India was under British rule. Lt. Col. C. Martin along with his wife was posted in Malwa, Madhya Pradesh. The British had a fierce battle going on with the Afghans on the North West frontier (currently in Pakistan). Col. Martin was also asked to join the British troops fighting the Afghans. Once there, Col. Martin would regularly write letters of his well-being to his wife.
His wife, who was at Malwa, would feel relieved after receiving and reading those letters. Although, she would be worried for her husband, but his regular letters would pacify the anxiety she felt for him. With time, the battle grew intense and Col. Martin was unable to write letters on a regular basis.
Mrs Martin became sick with worry, thinking of her husband all the time.
She was extremely upset when the letters stopped showing up. Once she was wandering about the streets of Malwa, when she came across this temple of Baijnath Mahadev, wherein Aarti (rituals) were going on. She somehow felt attracted towards the conch blowing and bells gonging, that she went inside the temple. The Pujari (priest) was surprised to see a white woman in the temple. He asked her the reason why she was looking upset and what brought her there.
Mrs Martin explained, she was unaware if her husband would ever come back. The Priest suggested her to perform a Pooja for 10 days to please Lord Shiva and later when her husband comes back safely, they should get the temple renovated. She promised that she would and started the pooja from the next day on wards with a lot of devotion. After the pooja was completed, on the 11th day she received a letter from her husband, stating he was absolutely safe and should be returning soon.
Mrs Martin's joy knew no bounds, she was ecstatic. Once Col. Martin was back he told his wife, how he was surrounded by the Afghans at one point of time and then suddenly there appeared a Yogi, who was wearing a tiger skin, with long hair and a trident in hand. The Afghans got really scared when they saw him and ran away and the Yogi then said, how his wife's devotion had pleased him, due to which he had to protect him. And then suddenly, like he appeared, he vanished in a flash too.
Mrs Martin had tears of joy in her eyes, she took her husband to the temple and showed him a picture of Lord Shiva there and asked if the Yogi looked like Him, to which Mr Martin agreed. Then Mrs Martin told him about the Pooja that she had done to please Lord Shiva for 10 days and how He actually protected him. The couple then spent Rs. 15,000 for renovation of the temple. And before returning to England, they also promised to become devotees of Lord Shiva for the rest of their lives.
